enclosing crawl space with brick

My house is on pier and beam. I would like to enclose the crawl space with brick to provide more attractive appearance. I have been advised this is a bad idea due to propensity to rot the floor joists. I've seen it done on many houses in the south with decorative blocks to provide ventilation. Is this a bad idea? What are the alternatives?:(

I would seal the ground under the house with a vapor barrier and provide vents in the brick. If need be, install a fan hooked to a humidistat to keep the humidity level equal to the exterior if you see the humidity in the space getting elevated.

I'm not planning on enclosing all 4 sides, only the front side initially and then maybe the back side if it looks good. Do I still need to install some type of barrier or will the other 2 sides left open provide adequate ventilation? Thanks for your advise.

The advice was based on the post that you were enclosing the crawlspace.
You are not enclosing the crawlspace, so you do not need to do anything with one or two walls, as there will be adequate ventilation.
