Elevated Deck

I have seen several similar threads, so I think I know the answer to this, but is it POSSIBLE to build a 14'x14' deck elevated to 8' using only 4 corner posts (4x6 or 6x6)? Does it make a difference whether or not it is physically attached to the house? Thanks.

You will be limited by your beam.

It is possible to build such a deck in compliance with the International Residential Code (IRC) 2006 edition, which is the code my town works under. Your town may work under different codes, check with your building inspector. You need to size all your framing appropriately for the span, the tables in the code will tell you how large the framing members need to be.

Thanks for the response..are you referring to my cross/support beams or the uprights?

Thank you for the help, I will check into that.

Anything can be done... as long as you've got the money to throw at it. What you're asking for is fairly easy though, however not typical to most deck construction. Steel frames can do those spans easily (like trex elevations)

Yeah, I figured I'd be putting a few extra dollars into the support system..but that's ok if I can get the results I am after. Thank you for the help, sir.
