Drywall/sheetrock around windows

A very elementary question: How tight should drywall/sheetrock be above and around window openings? I tend to make the drywall to drywall joints snug but do I need any space around window openings?

Thanks

It should not protrude past the framing. Doing so keeps you from adequately maneuvering the window in the opening to center, plumb, level, square it and from installing insulation.
