Drywall opening in ceiling too large for heat vent unit

Am replacing heat-vent-light unit in ceiling, and current opening is about 3" wider than unit (after grill is installed). What can I use to 'close in' the opening (trim?) so the grill of the unit will completely cover the drywall?

Thanks for any suggestions...

Sheetrock, plaster?

If it's sheetrock just cut out a hole with square corners that bigger then the light and install a new piece of sheetock using strips of 2 X 4's laying flat to screw to.

Are there thin plastic moldings available that could be mitered and glued to sheetrock and surround the grill?
