drywall mud types
I usually use the premixed pails of mud but was wondering about the bags. They have a 20,40, and 90 minute setup bags available and others like all purpose. When do you use each type of mud? Will the 20 minute mud crack easier than the 90 minute or all purpose which takes 24 hours to dry? Just curious on these fast setting compounds and when to use which ones. Thanks
If you use fiberglass mesh tape, you should use the quick drying mud; not All-Purpose. Otherwise, all of the butt joints will crack. Depending on how much you have to tape, you can choose the appropriate drying time. Personally, I would use no less than the 45 minute mud. It will give you time to do allot of taping before it begins to harden. It is best to smooth it as much as possible, because it is difficult to sand after it hardens. Once the tape is bedded, then you can use All-Purpose on top of it. Use a Lite topper mud to finish the job.
Q: Will the 20 minute mud crack easier than the 90 minute or all purpose which takes 24 hours to dry?
A: No. Any of the Durabond muds are harder than the drywall. They won't crack easily. However, the All-Purpose mud will definitely crack on the butt joints with mesh tape, as I said.
Small hole patch that needs to be re-coated and sanded "asap": We use a 5 minute or a 15 minute dry-mix. Can be finished-off quickly.
Small dry-wall job: Let's say, we have a small basement renovation, and we have 3-4 tapers working on. We will use either a 45-minute (4 tapers) or a 90-minute (2 tapers). (4 tapers will fly-through/empty - a bucket of compound VERY quickly). By using a quick-set compound, we have been able to completely tape and finish (minus the sanding) basements in one day.
If we have alot of corner bead and soffits; we would use a 90 minute, because it takes longer to apply it all and "tie-in" the various areas.
In our Drywall trucks, we always keep a selection of 5 minute, all the way up to 90. Especially, this is the case in the winter-time, when ready-mixed buckets of compound will freeze.
So, in essence, the difference in using each compound is based on the time requirement needs.
