dry wall

Hi I have to do some dry wall how to install which way stand it up or lay it down and why would you do it lay down or stand it small walls maybe . say if you lay down a sheet of drywall and the wall is long then the drywall how you make a joint two sq joint not good for mud right top and bottom are sq right need help thanks
