Drilling through concrete

I'm planning on drilling a 1/4 inch hole through the concrete foundation of my house. The foundation is about 8 inches thick. Is a hammer drill the best tool for the job?

I'd sure appreciate any info. Thanks.

Yes, a hammer drill is what you need to drill through concrete.

If you're looking to buy a drill, might I suggest a 1" SDS rotary hammer drill. It can triple up as a hammer drill, a small chipper (hammer mode), and a regular 1/2" rotary drill. There are a wide variety of SDS bits and chisels.

If this hole drilling thing is just a one shot deal then forget everything I said as this would be way overkill for your needs.

You actually want a rotary hammer, not a hammer drill, especially for going through eight inches of cured concrete. Although the names are often used
synonomously, they are two completely different animals.

I nice 1" SDS+ Rot Ham is a good compromise ....
I ahve the later version...the Dewalt D25314 that come with both heads ... SDS+ and straight shank .....great little tool...
Maybe it doesn't do any one thing great, but it hits all the bases....
I'd buy it again....

Consider renting a combo rotary hammer/drill. This way you can test drive one for thye day and decide if you actually need to own one. Otherwise,
you may regret purchasing one from another due to noise, weight, ease of changing bits etc.
