drilling into steel door all the way thru for inside security bar install

I need to drill (1/4") thru my steel door to install inside security bars-will my 12volt Ryobi work or should I get the electric drill out? And, do I start with a smaller drill bit size 1st and use oil to prevent overheating/

If it's a residential, exterior "steel" insulated door you will have no problem drilling. It's just a metal "skin on the door, not solid steel. Even a commercial exterior door isn't (normally) solid which is the only reason you would need to use oil while drilling....

Use a sharp bit and use a punch to dimple the exact spot you want the hole. By using the punch it keeps the bit from wandering.
Keep the bit perpendicular to the door or the holes won't line up.
The ryobi should be fine with a good battery.

Good call on the center punch!

These doors are foam filled and the bolt head will dent the exterior. Drill the hole a little larger and insert a short piece of steel pipe over the part of the bolt that is inside the door. When you crank on the nut to tighten it, it won't dent the door.
