Double 2x6 support joist?

I am creating a passthrough of approx 6 ft in a supporting wall and
am installing a double 2x6 joist on jack posts at either end. I have been having a debate about whether you need to attach the joist to the ceiling
structure above. My husband says I should and I should toe nail in screws.
I say no. Who is right?. I should have mentioned that there is framing on 2 other sides, it is really an opening to alcove where my bathroom vanity will stand. the area used to be a set of stairs which opened
into an adjacent room. I closed it off by framing it in as a supporting wall and switched the opening to
the bathroom next door. The alcove is framed in on the right hand side and open on the other two sides. the red lines indicate where the stairs used to be from the 2nd and 1st floor, this area measures approx 3x6 feet.

Who told you that a 2x6 header would work with a 6' opening on a bearing wall?
