Do I need a header for door and window below the sill?
I have a 6" x 8" sill on top of stone foundation wall. I am replacing the rotted frame of a door and adjacent window. The sill spans this opening for 76". The house is 100 years old and the 2 1/2" x 8" joists that attach to it fit into notches in sill and the joists are notched also. The door opening is only 53" high x 30" wide, and so I dont have much room to give up for jam.
I am considering using double 2 x 10's for top plate and door rough opening, but I am wondering if I need to build a header below this 76" span of the sill.
PS. Is there a code restriction for acceptable door heights?

No header is needed on the sill as long as the jack studs(the ones that hold up the header above the door)sit on a solid plate which is resting solidly on the foundation wall.
As long as the ends of the joists extend beyond the foundation wall and can be supported on it,you will be okay. Door opening is only 53 inches high???!! This has gotta be a misprint?Did little people live here?
