DIY Hearth

Hello,

My wife and I are planning on installing a wood burning stove in our family room, which is an addition off of the back of the house. The room is on a concrete slab, as it was a screen room that was enclosed at one point (before we purchased it).

I was wondering if I could simply tear up the carpet and use the concrete pad and build a hearth on the pad itself. Any thoughts?

Could I just add decorative stone to the concrete to create the hearth?

Also, to clarify, we are going to take up the whole carpet and redo the room...

Thanks

Sounds like a good plan...

Be sure to read the installation requirements of the stove you buy. They may have protective requirements and distances which will tell you how big the hearth will need to be. Depending on the style of stove you may also need to treat the wall behind.

What AG said. When we installed an insert into our old fireplace I was able to get all of the manufacturers information and installation requirements online.

Have you thought about a raised hearth? I think it just looks better, and makes loading and cleaning the stove easier.

I Agree. The last house I lived in had an insert on a raised hearth, and my current house is wood burning masonry fireplace with raised hearth. I would hate having to bend down even further to throw logs in it.
