Different options for soundproofing a finished basement apartment

Hi all,

I just bought a 40 yr old semi that has original hardwood flooring with a finished basement. My brother in law will be moving into the basement apt and the sound from the tv directly above is horrible (as well as the footsteps) I was hoping to get some input on different ideas:

1) I demo the old basement ceiling and install special soundproof insulation & drywall and screw in the joists/beams and then hire a drywall prof. to finish the ceiling

2) Install a 2nd basement ceiling with a drop ceiling with S.P. insulation

3) Install new flooring in the room above, add a S.P. vinyl, foam, patted sheet after screwing down the floor

What the approx cost for 1 & 2??

Also, what can be done about the vents, is there a special padding or spray that softens the noise coming through? I did not want to move the existing ducts...

Thanks all

- Mike

This is a common issue. The lack of carpet and pad makes this scenario even worse.

You can address the issue from the floor side, or the ceiling side or both. Ideally you would address the sound vibration right at the source (the floor). If you have open joists, this is a luxury.

Have a look at the diagrams in this article for ideas:

Here's a very thorough approach from that article:
