The different foundation types

What are the advantages/disadvantages of the different foundations? (cost, digging, labor, strength, etc)

What situations are they best in, or not advised in and why?

Slab
Basement
Crawlspace
Concrete Pier
Treated Pole/post

From what I understand the pole type foundation seems to be the most DIY friendly, and cheapest.. Is there a catch?

You could write a book on your question. As a matter of fact, you can buy many books that will address these questions. The best type of foundation for a given project depends on the type of building you are putting up, the loads, the building dimensions, the soil type, the groundwater table, the local cost of materials, and aesthetic issues. Rather than wander off to write Moby Dick, perhaps you could describe your project, your site, and your priorities.

Smaller 1 story structures. Shed, workshop, 1-3 br house.. done solo or one friend helping.

Poles seem ideal, especially after reading a book on pole buildings. The only real problem I saw was that the treated wood will eventually decay, but it said pole structures have lasted well over 30 years. (maybe 50+?) Kind of made me wonder why every house isn't constructed with poles.

Putting a standard platform framed structure on a grid of 6x6 poles seems like a cheap, easy, effective way to build. Just wondering if there's something I'm missing.

Basement-More Expensive, More Labor, extra living space

Crawlspace-Cheaper, less labor

Slab-Not sure on cost, serves as your floor, plumbing is buried ..., probably not DIY friendly

Concrete Pier- Not sure how it compares
