how do i attach a 2x12 to a 6x6 for a deck

Wait, he has nailed the 2x12 to the 6x6 post but for a better support, he is now drilling though the 2x12 and all the way though the 6x6 with a 1/2 x 12 inch long spade wood or metal bit and is installing 1/2 x 10 inch long galvanized carriage bolts to secure the 2x12 to the 6x6 post. That is all I am getting now, the image is fading fast...........................

And that method is not an acceptable attachment method for a deck beam... Might want to get a new crystal ball with updated codes...

If the 2x12 is part of a built-up beam, compare it to this: http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf

Always sandwich the 2x12''s, This compression is what gives them added stability. You can either notch the 6x6 at the top and then carriage bolt the 2x12s in through the side, Or you can go with 3 2x12''s right ontop of the colum, and use a bracket specificly designed for it.
