Decking patterns

trying to decide how to put my decking down. I have a deck a few inches shy of 30' feet wide where I putting down IPE boards. All my boards are 20' long. Since I was top screwing them down I was trying to limit the butts and was going to originally just alternate 20 and 10 foot lenghts.

Ive had a few comments that I should have a more random pattern now Im thinking of going with 5,10,15 and 20' (of course adjust length to fit joists).

would this be ok? is there any recommended best practice to follow?

That's the way I'd do it. More random pattern on the joints looks better in my opinion. Whatever piece you cut to start, the off-fall will work on the other end....

I agree, and don't forget to seal the cut ends.

Thanks I figured it out that if I made sure all my joists and sleepers were at 16" I can randomize my 20' boards to any dimension. I had some joists that were off because the ledger bolts were in the way, I reset them so I can bolt a 2X4 stringer to the side of a couple of them so that I can keep a consistent 16".

How do you do 5/10/15/20 with 16" OC

Are you going to add bracing?

I abandoned the idea of the 5,10,15,20. Just going to go with random cuts staying on 16" centers. Thanks for asking

He mentioned in the original post he would "adjust length to fit joists". I think the 5, 10, 15 mentioned was a ballpark.....
