Decking a garage roof- weight loadings?

I'm lucky, I have a large garage approx 18'-00 x 25'-00. At present the garage has a lawn on top of it - it's a flat roof. I (read 'my wife') wishes to take up the lawn and lay a deck on top instead. I'm concerned about loadings if we were, for example, to have a lot of people gathering on the deck (yes, my wife dreams of lovely garden parties). The basic roof construction is as follows:

Two large RSJs 10"x5"spanning 18'-00 clear pitched at 10'-00 centres, they are big heavy things! Lying across these are 7"x2" timber joists at 15" centres i.e they have a clear span of 10'00". The roof itself, is constructed from reclaimed floor boards and is very sound. There's no sign of any deflection at present, though if my 12 year old daughter runs across the lawn, the fluorescent light fittings in the garage do seem to rattle considerably, so there's a fair bit of springiness there.

Can anyone tell me what size of timber beam ought to be there to support a walk-on floor as a opposed to a largely ornamental lawn. I could most probably introduce some supports mid-way on the 10'-00 span. So could anyone advise if thus reducing the 7"x2" joists' spans to an effective 5'-00 instead of 10'-00, if this would bring me somewhere near to a decent supporting structure for say 20 people gathering on the floor above.

Any advice / comments gladly received.

Cheers!

PS the deck construction would be 32mm boards resting on rails say 75mmx32mm (laid flat 75mm side in contact with roof surface) pitched at approx 15" centres

Gregor,

You need to get this all engineered.
Bring it to a certified design professional (engineer) and get it done right.
Chances are that your local inspectional services may want to see something engineer 'certified'.....in writing...

Could you post a pic of what you have right now? I have never seen a lawn on a roof before and I would love to see it.

Hehe!

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Notice you're all keeping way clear of any commitment to take on the slightest responsibility for an entire garden party plunging to its death! Probably quite sensible.

I'll have to take professional advice, I can see.

Many thanks once more!

GS

PS will try and dig out lawn pic.
