deck stairs, i'm almost finished with the deck

ok i'm on my last phase of this project, building the deck stairs. my plan is to build a whole side of the deck as stairs that go down, but i don't know what lumber to buy.

i used a stair calculator to get the below numbers but i need help understanding them. i don;t know what size boards to buy.

total rise 54
target step height 7.25
tread thickness 1.5
tread depth 10.5
total number of steps 7
total number of tread 6
height of first step 6.21
height of typical step 7.71 in
postion of stringer on landing 9.21in
total run 63 in

Eight foot lengths should be fine.

This is what your numbers called for.

This is using a 2x12... as you should.

But note that this will make your top floor the last step, with the stringers fastening well below the deck. The overall frame is where your top will meet.

Doing it this way, you could get by with 7 footers.

ok this is why i come here you guys are so good. ok from the top of the deck to the ground is 54 inchs, the joist that they strings will attach to is 12 inchs wide.

so the bottom of the joist to the ground is 42 inches.

so i guess my calculator is all off cause i used the top of the deck.

If you can go another 10.5" on the run (total of 73.5"), I sure would. But then I happen to like having a step on the very top, not stepping down right off the deck. Just feels better to me.

And, 7.71 IS a bit tall. But if you shorten each rise any, you are also going to have to go longer with the run.... I think you would end up with something like 6-3/4" risers. and I think you would add 21 inches to the run. (This paragraph is just off the top of my head, so do the math yourself.)

54 to the top of deck to ground
7 inches is ideal step height so we divide by 7
54/7=7.714.... so that means if we round it up we have 8
54/8=6.75 so each step will be 6.75 tall
making the last step off the stringer to the deck counts as one of these steps so your stringer when cutting it will have 7 steps
know the first step you have to cut off the tread thickness or when you add the treads it would be 6.75+1.5=8.25
hopefully this makes sense to you

i am also going off of that the 54 inches is where the last step lands on the ground not straight down from deck. due to it being rare that it is the same height 7 feet away from deck

This would be close to ideal to me. (That bottom riser still might need some tweaking.... didn't want to get into 1/32's)

also to give something solid to hang stringers off of deck i add additional 2x8 or 10 under floor just to give the back stringer something to go against and to nail the stringer hanger to

Here's both of them for comparison. (<CONTROL> + mouse wheel ..... will enlarge or shrink image, depending on which way you roll the wheel)

Yes, but I'd use two 2x6's (with a typical deck gap between them) Watch the nosing overhang... try to keep it to 1".

I'm assuming you can get away without putting in riser opening coverings?

These were drawn anticipating 1.5 thick treads (pretty common on decks), but yes, you can buy 2" or 3", but much big $.
