Deck Slope

I am building a small 8' wide x 4' out from the house deck. I sloped the deck away from the house with the intention of it being 1/16" per foot, so a quarter inch. I found a deck building book that recommended this amount and a carpenter I know agreed. I thought my measurements were correct but I had a friend over helping and noticed it was closer to 1/8" per foot (1/2" total). Now that I am doing more and more research online I am finding a lot of information that recommends no slope at all.

Is a half inch slope over 4' way too big?? I feel like I made a mistake but not sure I can go back to correct it or if I even need to. Any thoughts?

Unless the aesthetics of it is bothering you, you'll be fine. I rarely slope decks.

Right now, just framed, the aesthetics do not bother me too much. I was more concerned about it being a noticeable slope when you are standing on it or put a drink down on it.

When I put up the railings should I make the railing follow the slope or have them level?

I've also never sloped a deck.
Level the railings, that's what the eye will see as being unlevel if you slope them.

I would notice but most wouldn't. There are instances where decks need to be sloped and when they do 1/8" per foot is the norm.

It sounds like it's bothering you...just shim up the post a bit at the bottom.

Since I've never known water to be able to flow across the gaps between boards, I've never sloped a deck. A concrete or tile or brick patio, yes, but not deck.

Concrete, tile, and membrane decks is what I was referring to.

You do realize you are talking just a taste over 1/2 a degree, (.6) in 4 feet?

That would show up as right around 1/32 of an inch across a 3" glass of liquid.
