Deck screws mushrooming...

I am making progress on my deck, finally installing the deck boards!!

Is there a way to reduce the amount of mushrooming on the composite - choicedek boards?

I put down 5 boards, pre drilled 1/2 and simply screwed 1/2 and all have mushroom effect to them. Any suggestions??? I have "tapped" as the choicedek installation says on the refuse, but you can see it all over the deck.

Also- over time, will the "tapped down" refuse fade away....I bought the screws that match the deck, so I am not worried if they show down the road.

Thanks,
Adam

Ayuh,... You could drill a counter-sink when you predrill the holes...

They sell screws that don't mushroom at big box stores.

Sorry I don't have a brand name to reference; I know when I did some composite decking at my house I bought them and they worked for me. Try calling one of big box stores and ask them if they have them in store.

Yep, HD and Lowes carry screws specifically for the composite decking that are supposed to take care of the issue you're running into.....

Everyone above is right.

Please do not 'tap' the mushroom over. You spend tonnes of money on a low maintenance deck and the people at the store say to hammer down the mushroom.

That is the fastest way to ruin the good look of the composite decking.

I install tonnes of the stuff, I iether use the proper screws (small head and extra set of threads)....ask for the proper composite decking screws...they come in colors as well.

If you are stuck, another method is to predrill with a counter sink bit. No mushrooming and the screw sets in and looks real neat. It looks professional, and it is not that much more time consuming, just get a good bit ( around $20-25 bucks will do).

Hope that helps..
