Deck Rail Help Needed

1 Attachment(s)
Ok guys I need to know where I screwed this up because I really only want to do it one more time. Take a look at the 45 degree joints in the pics below. When I cut these joints 1.5 years ago they were tight and perfect. The reason I replaced the boards that were there before because they looked the same way, I thought to myself why would anyone cut joints so poorly, I soon found out I was no better than the guy before me. What do I do to make this correct? I know I need to replace the board, but should it be attached different, should it be thrown out behind the shed for a year and aged or dried out, etc...

Once it dryed out it shrunk.
One way to cover it and make it look far better is to use composite decking boards over it.
It will no longer splinter, crack or shrink. Set them in a bed of constrution adhesive on top of the old rails and add some screws from below to attach them.

Is covering it w/ sheet metal or thin plywood L's too tacky? The L's could even have lips bent down on both sides so you could screw them into the sides of the present boards. Stainless steel or brass L's may give it a nice, expensive look.... 'cause it WILL BE expensive!
