Deck/Pergola question

Building a large deck with a friend over the next few weeks. His deck is going to be 20 by 16 and 20 by 20. So in total it is 40' length broken into 2 sections.

Over the 16' section he is wanting to put in a pergola. Only way I see this is possible is to put post on his 4 corners and one in the middle on the outside/part of the railing, and one that will be in the middle of the deck. I don't think there is anyway we could try to span 16' without it being very week and sagging. He isn't excited about putting a post in the middle of the deck, but I don't really see any other options. Anyone have any ideas?

Also when you guys lay deck boards do you do them at an angle, straight and move the seam? Trying to decide which way we are going to do it. Would prefer to do it with the least amount of waste.

Thanks for any help.

Deck/Pergola question

There are MANY differant patterns I would look at a few books to give you some ideas for patterns.

As far as spanning 16' would not be a problem for a pergola. But your beam will need to be of decent size. I am thinking at least 2 2x10's. But your local building department should double check that when you apply for a permit.
