Deck Nails

Sorry if this is a ridiculously easy or stupid question but...Can I use "16d bright common" nails for a pressure treated deck?

Thanks

Can you? Yes.
Should you? NO!
You need to use a fastener that offers corrosion resistance i.e. galvanized. Are you talking about framing construction or decking fastening?

Personally I won't use nails for PT deck construction, I far prefer construction screws rated for PT contact. More expensive, but IMO far superior.

Yeah it's for the framing. I already bought the screws you mentioned, the thing is I am putting up the hangers now and I think I should use nails for those?

Pressure treated or ANYTHING outdoor needs to have hot dipped galvanized (galvanized nails). Do NOT use bright common. They will rust and break.

I am working on my deck right now. Use 8d or 10d galvanized nails for the hangers. They usually come 1 1/2" . I then toenailed the joists to the ledger using 3" 16d. Just please don't use anything other than galvanized.

And yes, for structural applications you must use nails NOT screws.

There are special nails for the hangers, short stubby hot dipped galvanized...much like these. Use them...they're the right thing to use, plus they won't hardly bend...a plus for this application. There are other brands but search'em out.

As stated:

All exterior applications: Galvanized or Stainless fasteners, NEVER brights.

Pressure Treated lumber for use ANYWHERE: Galvanized or stainless because anything else will corrode due to the CAQ preservative treatment of the lumber.
Additionaly, DO NOT USE ALUMINUM FLASHING with Pressure Treated lumber. Use approved copper deck flashing only.
