Deck - Joists bearing on a beam question

What do you guys use to secure the joists that are sitting on the beam? Do you use the Simpson H1 or H2 hurricane ties or just toe nail or screw?

Mucho thanks!!

This is a good question for your building inspector.
You are getting a permit, right?

we typically use one or the other (H1 or H2.5) if the beam is below the joists. of course I'm in a hurricane wind area.

I pulled a permit that cost me $154.00 and did so for safety reasons. The deck I'm building is ~9 ft off the ground so, I wanted to ensure my deck was safe for friends and family.

Deck - Joists bearing on a beam question

I do not know if you've already designed your deck or not, but I'd suggest reviewing this design guide put together by the American Wood Council which is based upon the requirements of the 2009 International Residential Code. http://www.awc.org/publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf

this document came about because of all the deck failures we've experienced across this great country of ours.

good luck!
