Next project on the building permit is a deck! We're building a small 10x12' deck off the back the of the house. The only thing I'm not sure about is setting the posts.
Dig a hole 48" deep. then pour 12" of concrete to set the post on, then fill with concrete 6" above grade. Correct?
The next issue is setting the posts near the house. One of our projects earlier in the year was waterproofing the basement. Now we have pea gravel filled to 6" below grade. What would be the best way to dig these post holes without pea gravel filling in the whole around it?
So far we have no problems with inspectors with the basement water proofing, drain tile and 220V garage sub panel install. I'm hoping to go 4 for 4 on home improvements!
Concider building it free standing (not attached to the house) and cantilever the joist.
That way your not dealing with the drain lines and there's no chance of damage to the side of the house.
Make sure this deck is a bare minumim of 4" below any door thresholds.
Never set the deck boards tight to the side of the house, there needs to be room for water to run off.
Set the floor joist 16" on center, this way it's stronger and at some point someone could use composite lumber without having to go back and add joist.
