Deck Beam to Post attachment question.

For my 18'x30' monster deck, the span tables call for using (3) 2x12s as a beam. What is the best way to attach them to the 8"x8" post? I figured I would notch the post and be able to use 1/2" or 5/8" carriage bolts to secure the beam to the post but, what about when the beam is dog-legged?

Use 2 posts a little away on each side of the dog leg

May have to have a custom made bracket made for that one.
Any real machine shop could make it.

I think that even with three plys of 2xs you would be fine in notching the 8x8 posts. Sounds like it will have plenty of bearing.

Andy.

may ways to do this, you could notch out 3" from the column (leaving 4-1/2"). the inner two plies would bear directly on the column. the outer ply would be supported either by a wood cleat attached to the face of the column or metal connector made for this situation.

could pad out the beam to the same depth as the column (pad out at the column) and use metal column caps.
