I am building a 12 x 16 deck between two houses. What I am reading if I understand it right on figuring joists and spans is if you use a 2 x 10 you can span 16.1 feet from ledger board to post on a footer for 40psf live load and 10psf dead load. Would it be the same if I were going from ledger board to ledger board or is that too much pull on the ledger boards.

If you're spanning 16 feet between 2 houses, I would pour footings and put a support beam mid span.

Yeah...max on a 2x10 is 15'10". IMHO that length span would be way too bouncy and I dont think you'd be happy with the result.

Do as Ron suggests.

If done as Ron states it will cheaper to build because of the change in joist size.

Ron has the solution. Again....

Help on the other questions, ledger attachment, footing size, etc.: http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf
Some species only span 13'+, read the chart included.
