Damaged siding...repair ideas?

I have this t1-11 siding on my outside shed that I am trying to rehab. There was some 1x4 trim where you see the discoloration. Obviously it wasn't well maintained.

The wood is soft, rotted, and easily broken off.

How should this get handled?

Place some 1x6 over it?
Cut the bad out and replace with 2x6 pressure treated?

I would cut the rotten wood out and in it's place put a piece of 1x? to fill the space.Then I would use or borrow a sheet metal brake and bend a piece of flashing that goes under the top piece of t-111, over the new trim board and over the bottom t-111.

Be sure to add another plate on top the wall inside for backing and blocking below the lower top plate for wall shear sheathing, if cutting/paste. Nail it well, that is holding the gable and wall in check from racking- hence the new nailing at all perimeter. Two lengths of "Z"-metal will work also, much cheaper. Remember to space the new trim board out on w.p. shims so problem doesn't occur again.

Structural panel siding requires perimeter nailing to obtain the rated shear value (resistance to racking along the wall line in a high wind/seismic zone). Any pieces removed from the perimeter requires new nailing at the new edge of the sheet. Hence the blocking below the wall's top plate and the added plate (wood framing), to support the sheet's edges.

Oh the may joys of trying to use T-111.
There should have been just a strip of Z moulding there, not a trim board.
Anything you try and use there that sticks out like that will allow water in between the two pieces and as you have seen will rot it out.

Yes...guess that stripping didn't come with the kit twenty years ago. Oh well.

Going to cut out the rot and throw a 2x4 in its place. I'll bend some aluminum around it and make my own flashing. Should solve the problem....for noe

Leave a 1/4" gap between your flashing and the bottom edge of the top piece.
