cutting out some top plate in a load bearing wall


Can i remove 2 stud spaces worth of a top plate in 2 different locations on a load bearing wall in my basement to allow for my cold air returns to come up? My wall is about 28' long with 2 openeings on each end for a 32" door

There's not a scenario where I would ever think that would be a good idea.

Is this new construction?
Through the floor or to the attic?
2 stud bays will weaken the wall no matter how you try to patch it back, and you are talking 2 areas Why not put a chase in and then you will not have to cut any plates?
