Question

custom-build utility tub on concrete floor

this thing is going to be something like a floor tub in a janitorial station, i.e sitting on a concrete floor and will be finished with tile.

but i was wondering whether water will be making its way through the grout and soaking the concrete and whether that will eventually cause breakage ?

i know that when building tiled custom showers on wooden platforms, there is a PVC liner that is placed below (?) the cement board to stop leakage. but i do not know how i would incorporate something like that straight on concrete ?

thanks,

I would make the basin out of what ever you wanted 2x and plywood, then build the liner from Kerdi and tile as normal. Make a mud bed for the floor sloped like a shower, kerdi the bottom up the sides over the top and down the front, onto the existing cement floor.

are you saying put the liner over concrete, then mud bed, then tile over ?

confused (but thankful).

No; mud bed, kerdi, tile.

Here's a great resource for the mud and kerdi is not like any PVC liner you'll ever use. The pros will argue it's better since it creates a water proof barrier between the tile thin-set and the substrate. Here's a brochure about the product, and a detailed drawing of the installation. Google for online sources, some local places may carry it, but I've had better luck on line.
