Question

Cultured stone over rigid insulation?

I'm residing my house and would like to add 3/4" rigid insulation over the sheathing to give my house a little higher R-value. I'm wondering if I can put the rigid insulation behind the cultured stone I'm installing around the base of the house? If so would I install it the same way I would if I was going over the sheathing?

Think of Cultured Stone (or any adhered veneer) as the final coat of a three coat stucco system and you will be OK.

So to answer your question, No, you can not apply it directly over foam, you will have to lath and lay down a scratch coat, a brown coat, and then the stone. And there are very specific details that need to be followed pertaining to fasteners and waterproofing. The Cultured Stone website has those details for download in .PDF format.

I certainly agree with your advice, but I thought you typically advocated for plastering & setting of stone at the same time? I know we've always struggled to get the stone to stick in doing so, as it's far easier the next day when the scratch is dry.

Not over foam. CMU or hardi board, even sheathing, yes.

Yes, I've had the oppurtunity to lay cultured stone on a home where the sheating was 1" foam, nothing else except in the corners. If you sneezed near the stone before it set, you had a pile at your feet.

What's your thoughts on letting the plaster dry a day or 2 before setting? Do you think the speed in which it draws the moisture out is bad?

I don't think it hurts a bit. You may have to dampen it a bit if it is hot out, but I have stuck it on to days, weeks, even years old cmu and stucco.
