cultured stone over real stone

Hi, I hope that I'm not covering old territory, but I couldn't find the exact answer to my question. I'm wanting to put cultured stone over the stone that is covering my fireplace surround (it looks like rip rap, ugly). Can I use a mortar mix to level the surface of the stones in order to install the cultured stone? If so, what kind of mortar should I use and should I wet the stones and mortar before putting the mortar over them? Thank you for considering my question.

Cultured Stone has a very detailed installation manual on their web site. Have you seen it?

I'm not sure if it answers your question about leveling the surface, but it's a good place to start.

Thank you for sending the information; however, what I was asking was about the base stone and the application of mortar on that stone.

Would I be better putting hardiboard over the stone?

How uneven is the surface? In most cases I think you would use metal lath and a mortar scratch coat.
