Cultured stone

looking into installing a little fake stone on the front of our porch, talked to the guy at the local supply yard about the project and bassed on job size (small less than 100 sq ft) and lack of masonary experince he recomended using tile backer board (dur rock) rather than mesh and scratch coat?? Anyone have any experince using this method

Cultured stone

neither method is hard to do I personally think the lath(mesh) holds the stone better especially for an outdoor usage. The first you just cut your backer board and screw it in place put on your mortar and place your stone.the second you put up plywood and tar paper over it then your lath apply a skin coat to cover the lath and in a day or two put on a second coat to smooth it out and apply your stone.Thats kind of a simplified version so if you have more questions feel free and someone will answer

Attaching the stone with thinset is better over the hardi-backer, and I agree that it is easier than doing lath/stucco.
