Crumbling plaster on walls

The paint and thin layer of plaster beneath is crumbling. Someone suggested it might be salt working through from the brick underneath. What can I do?

Hi, you have , or your wall has, efflourescence (might not be spelt right) which is indeed the lime salts being liberated from either the bricks or sometimes the plater. The standard cure is to expose it, brush it off with a wire brush, seal the brickwork and replaster the area. It can be caused by damp penetration, or sometimes just happens !!! Good luck

Thanks. Forgive one more silly question - seal the brickwork with what?
