crumbling field stone sandstone foundation...can we resurface the visible outside portion?

We have a 90 yr. old home. There is about three feet of exposed above ground foundation with painted field stone sandstone foundation that is peeling and crumbling in many places. There are also some places that have a crystal like appearance on top of the bubbling painted surface. Because of the condition and the style of this exposed foundation, we would like to resurface it so it looks more aesthetic. The field stone has a shallow crater like apperance. Is there an inexpensive DIY solution that will fix our problems and if so, what products will we need? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

trying to think of a nice way to say this,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1, reface crumbling stonework &, subsequently, not know/see the degradation til part of the house falls down; 2, remove/replace as rqd now; or 3, do nothing ? that's the choices.

for the other part ( inexpensive ), no, not if its done right.

1st hire a structural pe; 2nd, find an OLD-TIME mason; 3rd, get rid of cable tv & use the $$$ for the repairs.

DIY ? can't suggest w/your apparent level of expertise,,, good luck !
