Covering basement windows with Blue Foam Board

We have older style windows in our basement, that I will not be replacing until next year, and was thinking about using 2"-4" Blue Foam to cover them this Winter. Last year I reglazed them, but we still saw frost & ice on the windows, because went cheap and used Plexiglass instead of Glass, since we were going to replace the windows any ways.

Is there any reason, besides sealing the edges of the foam with caulk or just cut for tight fit. This is only a temp purpose again, until next Spring when I can order either glass block, or just have a mason remove them and plug the holes with Concrete Block, same for the old Coal bin door.
