Cosmetic mortar coating over chimney. How thick?

Probably too late, but today I installed metal lathe over our chimney and set it in place with galvanized masonry screws and washers.

I'm using a type S masonry mix and have the mesh and screw heads covered with mortar. It's a about 1/4" in most places but perhaps a little thinner in others.

Since this is only for looks and will be painted next Spring, is this about right or should I go over it with another thin coat? Same mix or something different?

Thanks.
