Converting my garage from a 2 door to a single door.

Hi all. I have a 20'x20' garage with a hip roof that is current a 2 door. I want to convert it to a single door, but had a question about the header. Right now, the header is 2 2x8x20 pine sistered together, but since it's a 2 door, it has a support in the middle of the span. Obviously since I want to convert it to a single door, I'll need to take out the middle support, but how do I know what would be the appropriate header to replace it with? I was thinking of using 2 2x8x20 LVL, but wasn't sure if this would be strong enough. Can anyone on here help me out? Thanks!

Jesse

If it's roof load only, it simplifies things. Still, the answer changes based on the material you want to use. For an example, let's look at Southern Yellow Pine. You reference the document with the support information, and match it to your scenario.

See this PDF page 8. http://www.southernpine.com/pdf/ref207.pdf

Edit: Actually, it doesn't even have 20' clear opening as an option, so then you'd have to be getting into steel or LVLs (laminated veneer lumber). That's an awfully big distance to span.

Well my clear opening will only be 16' and according to the PDF, a 20' supported roof framing (the garage is 20x20). So according to the table, with a 16' clear opening and a 20' span of supported roof framing, the header would require 3 2x12 No. 1 grade southern pine. However, how can the header be "3" 2x12s? The tops of the 2x4s that the ends of the header would rest on would be too narrow (a 2x4 is only 3 1/2" wide). 3 2x12s would be 4 1/2" thick? What if I used 2 2x12 LVL?

go into your local lumber yard and ask them to size the header to your code required loading. I know the yards in my area can do that, though sometimes they have to send it out to their engineer.

I converted two doors one once - easiest with the least surgery and lack of clearance was to go with a steel header.

Called my local lumber yard and they hooked me up. Thanks so much!

Converting my garage from a 2 door to a single door.

Hey guys. I know it's been a while, but I completed my garage door conversion project and I also just finished putting up a wall made from recycled fence planks. It's my sisters old privacy fence now converted into a beautiful rustic interior wall. Very cheap, but labor intensive.

Glad you found help. The wall looks good but if that's against interior living space, you've removed the fire rated wall assembly for an un air sealed now flammable wall.

Maybe you missed the picture, but there's a window with sun shining into it in the picture. Highly unlikely it's an interior wall.............

Looks like you have a low headroom kit installed on your garage door. May I ask if it was difficult to install?

Don't mean to hijack.

The garage is detached from the house and I paid to have the garage door installed.
