Converting Carport to a living space
Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to extend my existing carport approximately 20 feet? It has a solid concrete floor that is at least 1 foot thick. It is a carport with a storage unit enclosed and this sits on the concrete slab and this is attached to my house. My problem is this: I want to extend the front of the carport 20 feet and make this a garage and bedroom and bathroom with a small utility room. Do I have to pour a footing for the increase? I am sorry if I am making this sound complicated, I am a woman for pete's sake. I just need to know if I need to pour another footing. I live in Arkansas and can't get an answer til Monday. Can someone tell me now?
Converting your existing carport to living space would be a challenge if there is not a footing underneath the perimeter of the slab. Requirements vary by region, but I would imagine that you need some sort of frost footing in Arkansas. Without one, your slab is able to shift up and down when the ground freezes and thaws.
A carport slab itself wouldn't normally require a footing, because if it moves up and down it wouldn't normally be catastrophic. If the carport will have walls, posts, or a roof, those elements would require a footing.
