confused about insulation placement

Hi,
confused, here, If I am insulating a small attic space and there are no soffit or ridge vent, only a gable vent for venting do I place the insulation all the way over to the soffits over the exterior? I am think I do. I do not plan to add soffitt vents as I have never had any issues the way it is now. Where do I run the insulation too?

Insulating over soffits is a waste of time/money, there is nothing there to insulate. Just insulate over living spaces. And soffit vents do help attic venting considerably.
