concrete walkway separators


i need to build a walkway. every concrete walkway i've seen is divvied into something like 4' slabs with something like 0.5" separation between that's filled with something i can't identify. what are those separator things?

1st understand the REASON the conc's divided is to allow it to crack where WE want it to crk,,, conc likes to be square to a point - placing too large a piece w/o designed cracking ( contraction jnts ) tells the conc we either don't care, we're ignorant, or, in the case of our diy garage floor bldr who ' didn't have time ' to cut jnts, stupid to the point he hurt himself.

what you see is beaverboard or paperboard impregnated w/asphalt cement/water emulsion,,, its called ' expansion joint ' &, once you know what you're doing, isn't necessary,,, most do not even if they do it for a living so they'll blindly follow the engineer's plans rather'n going for change orders,,, note you won't find expansion jnt mtl on conc highways, runways, or aprons ( sidewalks for airplanes & cars )

if you hear it from a guy in the apron store, be VERY suspicious the mtl/method will work,,, when it time to build something together, they won't answer phones NOR help

thanks. what is the commercial name i should be looking for to buy this thing ? beaverboard ?

What he's saying is, you don't need it. Use one of these:
http://www.concretenetwork.com/photo...roducts_25993/ while you're finishing after you've poured the slab. The concrete will crack in the groove, and noone will be the wiser.
