concrete sidewalk

we rented a jack hammer and have busted up all the old sidewalk. We will be raising the sidewalk approx 6 inches, 10 in some areas. Can we leave the broken pieces of concrete, lay sand and repour?

concrete sidewalk

would in my OWN s/w but i'm a lazy sob, anyway ixnay sand & use proper base mtl,,, granular compacted - down here they call it ' crusher run ', ' run of crush ', ' graded aggregate base course, ' gabc ', etc,,, in ny, its nysdot item 4 - clean granular is the key - well compacted is the result - proper drainageis important, too,,, sand never compacts properly,,, be certain not to leave HUGE pieces of old s/w ( 3" - 4" is fine ) as they'll move during compaction leaving soft spots in the base
