Concrete block - bond pattern

I'm adding an addition that includes a full basement. 2 questions on using concrete block.

1. Any advice on how to bond the new block to the old poured foundation walls?

2. For size reasons, three of the four walls in the new foundation are not sized as multiples of 8" such that whole and half blocks can be used. Each will require a short block to fill the space. How to I use a short block and still keep a running bond pattern?

Concrete block - bond pattern

1. Drill rebar into your horizontal bond beams.

2. Modular for CMU is the same Modular as for wood. Why would you not size it on a multiple of 8"? Anyway, there will just be a short piece on every course. There should be no piece less than 4" wide however, so you may have to have 2 odd size pieces per course.
