code hight for railings


Does anyone know the code hight for porch railings in massachusetts? it's a 1st and 2nd floor set of railings that I need to install.

code hight for railings


MASS STATE BUILDING CODE BOOK:

Section 1022.2.2 Height:

Handrails shall not be less than 34 inches (864 mm) nor more than 38 inches (965 mm), measured vertically, above the leading edge of the treads or above the finished floor of the landing or walking surfaces.

Exceptions:
1. Handrails that form part of a guard shall have a height not less than 34 inches (864 mm) and not more than 42 inches (1067 mm)

2. Handrails within individudal dwelling units shall not be less than 30 inches (762 mm) nor more than 38 inches (965 mm), measured vertically, above the leading edge of the treads or above the finished floor.
