close in opening between roof/rafters and side walls of cabin

I have a framed in cabin which I am putting HardiPlank Siding on (4x8 sheets). It is rustic and unheated in NE area. What do I do to close in open area under roof where rafters are, above exterior walls? Similar shed type building closed them in with 1x4's, one on side, one below, painted. Better to use manufactored soffit with venting for flat area and eg 1x4 for side edging? Saw suggestion of luann panel cut to fit flat area and board used for side area (sorry I guess soffit and fascia are right terms?) Never did this and on my own to finish it out...will be generally left unheated but occasional wood stove in winter in there...thanks much appreciate any advice...Gracie

If you are going to have a flat ceiling instead of a vault you may need a cornice consisting of soffit, fascia etc. It is not an absolute necessity but does look nice and complete although many cabins have open rafters without cornice. If you want the open rafter look and have a flat ceiling then you will need to enclose and insulate the area you are talking about. The way you suggested is as good away as any. If you do have a vaulted ceiling though, you will need to have vents in the area between your rafters. I am not much on Luan (or however it is spelled) as it just don't hold up well.

close in rafters exterior walls on cabin

hmm...the rafters are prefab so no chance of vaulted ceiling...will have to have flat ceiling... what is a cornice for an outside wall? Have heard of it eg around windows...I thought the luan board sounded a bit lightweight and perhaps would wear out/rot a bit. Would be glad to do cornice but can you explain what it is for me? thanks so much...

here is a sketch of a cornice on the rafter tails or the part that over hangs the outside wall.

hardie plank makes regular soffit material also.
