clean mortar haze on brick


HI how do i clean the mortar haze off of new brick?

clean mortar haze on brick


This haze you are referring to is salt coming out of the bricks. Clay depending on where it comes from can contain a great deal of salt and the only thing to really get rid of it is time. I had a wall with the same problem I just kept washing it with a hose every now and then. The salt is deep in the brick and will take time to come out. It happens quite a lot.

I would be more inclined to think the haze is coming from the mortar. It's a new job, it's very likely there is mortar haze on the brick from the striking and cleaning of the joints. That would be common.

Natural salts coming from within masonry is typically referred to as efflorescence and I would bet that's not what this is. Not right now anyway. Efflorescence doesn't appear in the form of a haze, efflorescence typically blossoms and blooms.
