Chiseling/Grinding Stone Basement Wall

I need to remove about 1/2 inch from a section of a stone basement wall in order to get a clothes washer down the steps. The wall is made from large stone blocks.

Picture would help---For a small job an angle grinder with a diamond blade could be used to cut slits so you could knock off chunks.

How about taking the dryer apart and reassembling it in the cellar?

Forget the stone work! As already suggested, take the dryer apart and reassemble in the basement.
