Cheap metal roofing solution?

I'm building a 12x24 barn and got a quote on metal roofing today, which was about $1000. I then realized that metal roofing is not what i had in mind. it is overkill and will probably outlast the barn I'm building.

What material did they use back in the 1940's or so for barn roofs? It looks much more light-weight and thinner:
