cement board


i have a brick chimney chase 30x56 with bricks single laid so the chase is basically hollow, can i use 1/2 cement board as a cap and cover it with 1 to 1-1/2" cement. My prefab fireplace flue runs thru this chase

Cement board will sag trying to bridge those dimensions.

Cement board is not waterproof.
