Ceiling needs a new look.

I live in a 100 year old house. The cieling is just 1/2" planks. Right now it has those 12" X 12" white tiles on it that you just staple up. I'd like to tear those down and put something up that would allow me to paint on some texture. I know sheetrock is usually used but I don't know if these ceilings can withstand that much weight. Is there something I can just screw to the ceiling that I could paint the texture on to? Would cheap paneling work or anything else? Thanks.

Can you post a pic of the "1/2" planks"and advise how the ceiling is framed?

I'm guessing you have some sort of 1"x strips attached to the ceiling joists and 12"x12" tiles stapled to those. Remove tiles and strips and attach drywall directly to the joists. There have to be some sort of 2"x framing members involved. As Bob said, a picture would be helpful......

I wonder if the wood"1/2" planks" is wood lathe left in place after plaster removal?

I was thinking the same, as another possibility, Bob.

This is a 100 year old house. The ceiling is just wooden slats. Above the slats are just 2X4s about every 2 feet. The slats go from wall to wall and are screwed to the 2X4s. That's it nothing else but empty attic. It's very primitive . lol. I'll see if I can get some pics up soon.

if lathe...i wonder how this would look painted...

maybe alternate red and white... or a geometric pattern.... bulls eye maybe.... or add a 1/4 cup of white after painting the perimeter...and meet in the middle .... I need to think of something else....

ps
Believe it or not this was a cross post.... I was thinking of color combinations for almost an hour..

DVLCHLD, we look forward to the pictures.... thank you for coming back...we thought you demolished the room or something.
