Question

ceiling joists perpendicular ledger attachment -- metal hangers or just nails

my ceiling joists are on one side resting on a load-barring top plate (doubled up 2x4) but on the other side are being attached to a ledger, perpendicular. i know that using ZMax hangers by Strongtie works well but my concern is that the thickness of the metal makes a bump for subsequent drywall installation. so i was thinking if just nailing will work if i use regular 3" ring shank framing nail. the joists are 2x6 and their length is around 104" from the ledger to the top-plate. i was thinking to maybe do 2 nails on one side and 1 on the other, that should be pretty secure, probably not as secure as hangers but no bump. i did use hangers when i was building my deck and loved using them but the underside of the deck didn't need to be flush for drywall.

There called rafters if the in the ceiling, joist if there in the floor.
Sheetrock is installed over hangers all the time with no problum.
Is this something your building new?
Why just 2 X 4's

2x6, not 2x4. the ceiling will bear no load except for lights, right above it is the roof, maybe less then a foot in between (so too little space to use the attic).

OK, i can use hangers, no problem. but let's say that i didn't and just nailed it in place, do you think that would be a code violation in most places?

Use a simpson L50, it nails to the side do you have nothing coming across the bottom.

Call your building department and ask them what the codes are.... they will let you know .

I think you can get by without the hangers, by fastening a 2x3 along the bottom of your ledger board and set in your 2x6 joists to rest on 2x3 and face nailing your 2x6's through ledger board. should pass code most anywhere?

Pressure blocking meets code as well (but regular Simpson hangers are pretty thin metal, no "bump" for the sheetrock).
